TRRE Cohort 3 Resident and Teaching Mentors of the Month


Abigail Clark - Cohort 3 Resident


Abigail Clark has been working in barns and riding horses since she was eight-years old. She never realized that this passion would eventually lead her to her first experience with teaching. During her junior year of college, she discovered the joys of sharing her knowledge with others while working as an instructor for the therapeutic horseback riding program. She described seeing the empowerment and confidence in her clients when they learned how to control a 1,000-pound animal as “one of the best feelings in the world.” 

It was during her time as a camp counselor at the local Boys and Girls Club in her hometown of Plymouth Massachusetts that Clark realized she wanted to become a teacher. She had always been passionate about the natural world, animals, and the sciences, and working with the children at the Boys and Girls Club helped her to realize she wanted the opportunity to share this passion with others. 

Clark joined the TRRE program excited not only to share her passions with students, but to help them realize their own. A 2019 University of NH graduate with a degree in Biomedical Science, she is completing her residency in Elementary K-6 and Middle School Science at the Henry Wilson Memorial School in Farmington, NH. 

Jess Gelinas, TRRE Teaching Mentor
4th Grade, Henry Wilson Memorial School, Pittsfield


Jess Gelinas has been a 4th grade teacher at Henry Wilson Memorial School in Farmington for eight years. Building relationships with kids is one of her favorite reasons for being a teacher. She believes when you build relationships with your students you open the door academically for them as well. Gelinas’ inclusive classroom scaffolds learning that begins with building upon prior knowledge of students and engaging them in small group instruction.

When asked why a TRRE resident might want to work with her, Gelinas said, “I think that a Teaching resident would want to work with me because I really am a team player. The minute that the resident steps into the classroom it becomes “our” classroom. I am flexible and open-minded. I am also not afraid to fail! I think this is so important to remember. Learning to teach is that…learning!”

The Henry Wilson Memorial School community is special to Gelinas because she feels she could not ask for more supportive team members, which makes collaborating about student learning enjoyable. Also, being in a small district also makes it easier for her to follow students as they grow.

Outside of the classroom she spends a lot of time with her husband and three-year old daughter. Gelinas enjoys hanging out with friends and family. During summer, her absolute favorite season, she loves being outdoors to enjoy the lakes and beaches of NH. She is also a big fan of the New England Patriots.

Rachael DeAngelis, TRRE Teaching Mentor
7th Grade Science
Henry Wilson Memorial School, Pittsfield

A self-proclaimed “YouTube” junky, Rachael DeAngelis is always looking for ways to make her classroom more engaging and energetic. She considers a day successful when she incorporates movement and creative thinking into her lessons in order to see light bulbs going off in her student’s heads.  

Aside from providing learners with a diverse range of resources and learning opportunities within the classroom, DeAngelis is truly passionate about forming relationships with her students. She sees these relationships as instrumental in creating a classroom culture in which students feel comfortable and safe and are willing to take risks. She feels this is especially important in a smaller school like Henry Wilson with such high percentages of low-income families. 

DeAngelis has been a member of the Henry Wilson community as a 7th grade science teacher for the past 16 years. She loves the small community, which she feels encourages all stakeholders to become more involved. When she isn’t searching for new science resources, she enjoys camping, walking, hiking, biking and swimming in the summer, and watching football in the fall.
