Individuals accepted into the TRRE program (known as Teaching Residents) work toward earning a Master of Education (M.Ed) degree at the elementary or secondary level from the University of New Hampshire (UNH) and NH teacher certification. Teaching residents select one of five pathways: middle school math (K-8), middle school science (K-8), secondary math (7-12) secondary science (7-12), or elementary (K-6).
Teaching residents gain valuable knowledge and skills through three instructional pillars:
- Content and Pedagogy: Residents acquire strong mathematics and science content and pedagogical knowledge to meet rigorous academic standards, use data to inform instruction, and apply concepts of Universal Design for Learning (UDL).
- Clinical Strength: Residents engage in an initial field placement in a community-based organization, and they develop knowledge and skills to teach in rural schools through a full year residency. They receive further support by completing a 2-year induction program following graduation.
- Community and Family Competence in Rural Teaching: Residents benefit from a core curricular emphasis on leveraging the interests and commitments of rural families. They build on community assets through in- and out of school field experiences with community-based organizations.
